Boise Meridian Initial Point Celebration: Surveying the Past, Mapping the Future

Boise Meridian Initial Point Celebration: Surveying the Past, Mapping the Future is a signature event of the America250 in Idaho commemoration that uses Idaho’s Initial Point to connect the state’s landscape, people, and laws to the larger story of the American Revolution’s enduring ideals.

This event will take place on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at the Old Idaho Penitentiary in Boise, and offers a full day’s worth of activities, including hands-on surveying demonstrations, lecture-style programming and discussion, food and beverage vendors, and partner booths to connect people to Idaho’s Initial point and its history.

At the heart of the celebration is the Boise Meridian Initial Point, the volcanic butte south of Boise where Surveyor General Lafayette Cartee and his crews fixed the intersection of Idaho’s principal meridian and baseline in 1867, allowing surveyors to transform public domain into townships, ranges, and sections. From that single monumented point, hundreds of miles of survey lines enabled homesteads, irrigation projects, towns, and public lands to take shape, even as federal land policies and treaties remade Native homelands and profoundly altered tribal land tenure. Guided by America250’s pillars to honor, celebrate, and recognize, the event honors those who surveyed, settled, and stewarded this landscape, including tribal nations whose histories long predate the survey grid. It celebrates Idaho’s role in the American story by highlighting the state’s distinctive Public Land Survey System’s history, its multigenerational ranching, farming, and conservation traditions, and the civic spirit that continues to define communities anchored to lines drawn from Initial Point. Equally important, the event recognizes the unique contributions of Idahoans whose work in agriculture, natural resource management, technology, and education has made the grid more than lines on a map.
